(a) When an electromagnetic wave interacts with a material, what main three phenomena can occur?
(b) Illustrate these three possible phenomena with a single drawing.
(c) Provide a real world example of each with sunlight as the light source.
(a). & (c).
Basically waves interact with 3 ways :
(i) reflection- it occurs when waves bounces back from a surface they cannot pass through
For e.g - light form sun when falls on any surface ,reflects the light . When the reflected light enter our eyes we can see the object.
(ii) refraction- it occurs when light bends as they enter new medium.
For e.g- light from sun bends as it passes from air to water , this bending of light make the object appear much closer than they are actually.
(iii) diffraction- it occurs when waves passes through an opening in an obstacle.
For e.g.- sound waves bend around corners much more than light does.thats why we can hear not see around corners.
(b).

When light waves of the same frequency overlap, interference phenomena can be observed. In this problem two plane waves with the same angular frequency w but different wave vectors ki/2 nterfere as shown below. The waves are given by Ev/2 E1/2e)z, where E1/2 are real amplitudes. The wave vectors are and k-2n/λ is a constant wave number. 2 of the total field Ε = El-E, Hint: Remember that a) Calculate the intensity I(i ặcol in complex notation |ä2* b) Now...
The drawing shows three situations-A, B, and C-in which an observer and a source of electromagnetic waves are moving along the same line, in each case he source ents wave that has a frequency of 4.57 x 1014 Hz. The arrows in each situation denote velocity vectors of the observer and source relative to the ground and have the magnitudes indicated (v or 2v), where the speed v is 2.3 x 106 m/s. Calculate the observed frequency in each of...

a) Describe the difference between the three main photodetector types, specifically what they respond to and the process in which light is converted to a response signal. Give at least one example for each type of photodetector. b) Give an example for a setup you may want to use for each listed circumstance and provide your reasoning for each. You want to make a one time measurement and obtain a two-dimensional spectrum. Your sample is very sensitive to light, forcing...
