What other discipline or area of study do you think has an impact in an MIS/IT career? Why?
ANSWER:
Due to an increase in market demand, the fields of Information
Technology and Management Information Systems have seen innumerable
changes. Both have a significant dependence on technological and
methodological advancements, and as such require specialists who
can perform tasks in a continuously evolving atmosphere. Project
Management is one such area which has made a substantial impact in
both fields.
Every industry, especially those of IT, has projects; in terms of
complexity and duration, the type of project varies. A project is a
set of tasks/activities scheduled and carried out in such a manner
that they achieve the aim of the project, which is to create a
unique product, service or outcome. It is temporary, and has a
specific start date and an end date. It is rarely repetitive, and
has specific deliverables, functions, features, and costs
associated with it. Examples of projects include R&D prototype
builds, software design, and product innovation. A project expands
the core competencies, capabilities and innovative tendencies of a
business, thus improving its value addition process.
Project Management is the application of knowledge, tools, and
techniques to project tasks/activities. Resources deployed should
work in tandem to achieve the objectives of completing the project
scope, executing it within the time allotted, maintaining the
project budget and preventing cost overruns, and finally ensuring
quality throughout from start to end. It gives guidelines on
managing tpeople and the work. A project manager wears multiple
hats (multi-tasking) and has a high leadership score.
Considering the above information about a project and project
management, it is quite obvious that project management is
flexible, has unlimited learning potential, fits perfectly with
recent business strategies, increases customer and satisfaction,
prioritizes business resources, improves cross-functional
collaboration, and mitigates risk. Due to constant monitoring and
control, work productivity and efficiency improve tremendously.
Practitioners of project management have testified to its
contribution in their personal growth and career development due to
its tendency to “test” a person on all fronts. Organizations such
as the Project Management Institute continuously update and
increase their knowledge bank to keep pace with the rapidly
evolving industry.
Project Management, therefore, currently has and will continue to
have a profound impact in MIS/IT careers.
1 Management: MIS (Management Information System) itself is closely related to management. Mastering management knowledge helps to understand the structure, process and decision-making mechanism of the organization, so that IT personnel can better design and implement information systems that meet the management needs of the enterprise and improve the practicality and efficiency of the system.
2 Data analysis and statistics: In the era of big data, IT systems generate and process a large amount of data. Having knowledge of data analysis and statistics can help IT personnel extract valuable information from data, provide support for corporate decision-making, and also help optimize system performance and functions.
3 Psychology: Understanding user psychology is crucial to designing easy-to-use and efficient IT systems. It can help IT personnel better understand user needs and behavior patterns, so as to design interfaces and interaction processes that are more in line with user habits, and improve user experience and system acceptance.
