Plato in The Republic talked about how a society should be. He mostly talked through socrates. He said that a perfect city is always run by a perfect society. Now, when we talk about perfect society, a perfect society has class divisions of the populace. The citizens will be divided into two groups, first class and second class where first class is further subdivided.

Then Plato described three classes, guardians, auxillaries and craftmen. The guardians are the supreme power in the city called as military of the city. They are knowledgeable, and have to keep the city's wellbeing in front of their own well being. The auxillaries are the soldiers's of the city less respectful than guardians, and then craftmen and farmers are those having no knowledge, to grow food and develop material goods.
