Think more deeply than just answering "yes" or "no." If you think ethics is MORE than self-interest, what examples could you cite of ethically good people going against their self-interest? If you do NOT think ethics is more than self-interest, what examples could you cite that undermine selflessness?
Saying "yes" and "no" is a precious aspect. We can't be a "yes man" always. It can put us in trouble. We can't say no, every time either, because it may snatch various opportunities. So, there should be perfect balance between saying"yes" and "no".
We should analyse our strengths and weakness before making any commitment. We should act according to our interest and our potential. Suppose we hare having interest in music and we feel perplexities in understanding medical sciences.
Our parents want us to be doctor. If we will say yes to their wish then it will be injustice to our own potential and caliber because we can not give our 100 percent in that area which is not of our interest. We should scrutinise our priorities.
Ethics says that we should obey our parents but same ethical principles say that we should enjoy the task in which we are engaged. We should provide our level best performance to the task in which we are involved. A compromising attitude will be like a cheating with our parents and with ourselves also.
Hence we should be lucid in our thought process. We should communicate properly before making any decision. We should behave in a balanced and proper manner. We should be aware about our strengths and weakness.
We should search for opportunities. We should engage ourselves in productive work. We should work in a manner which can provide us a chance to become happy. Principle of ethics should be involved in our actions but consideration of self interest is also an important aspect.
