When we look at the spectra of distant galaxies, we usually observe that these galaxies are redshifted due to the Doppler effect. What does it mean to say the spectra are “redshifted”? What does this tell us about how those galaxies are moving?

By red shift, we mean to say that the light waves from the distant galaxies falls into lower frequency or longer wavelengths.

A galaxy whose absorption spectra is red shifted is moving away from us. This is true because we know that universe is expanding. Galaxies that are further away always appear more red shifted than the closer ones. Red shift means galaxy is moving away from the observer.
