Victims of fraud are often blamed for their own victimization and not viewed as “real” victims. After Bernard Madoff’s Ponzi scheme was exposed, many people blamed the victims for being greedy and gullible and for failing to investigate prior to investing with Madoff. Victims of online frauds such as advance fee frauds or phishing also are often blamed for their own victimization. Do you agree at all or in part with this viewpoint? Explain and support your view.
Although there are various precautions that the victims can take in order to prevent the occurence of these crimes and ensure that they are protected, blaming an individual for their victimization does nothing to resolve the problem at hand. It is insensitive to the victim's needs which must be addressed bases upon the priority. Warnings and awareness must be provided in cases where there is lack of knowledge regarding prevention. Blaming a victim would only add to the mental instability thah they face and may cause them to refrain from seeking help in the future as they believe that it is a consequence of their own doing.
