Skill variety – This characteristic refers to the number of different skills required by a specific job. An employee with a task that is monotonous will not see the meaningfulness of the job. Thus, that worker would be less motivated and productive. In my current position there are various challenges every day such as dealing with customer queries, reconciling accounts and constantly having to update my work knowledge. This keeps me motivated as my tasks require various skills.

Task Identity – This dimension explains the degree to which a job requires completion of a whole identifiable work from beginning to end. Workers tend to appreciate their job more when they can work to see a definite start, middle and end rather than working on some parts of a task. For example, in some cases, accounting projects at my job are divided, thus it may be difficult to see and appreciate a clear beginning and end.

Task significant – This characteristic refers to the substantial impact the job has on others. Just being aware of the impact your job has on others can help with motivation. My job gives me the opportunity to make a positive difference in other people’s lives. I can assist individuals who are not financially stable with the process to gain building materials on credit thus increasing their welfare. I feel motivated and delighted to see that my job has meaning and significance.

Autonomy – This characteristic, according to Bauer and Erdogan (2010), represents the level of choice, freedom, and independence employees feel they have to do their jobs. A worker that has the ability to plan and establish how to get task done has a high level of responsibility. At my workplace, I have the opportunity to make decisions and plan my work schedule. There are basic rules and regulations to follow, but I have a sense of responsibility as my managers allow me to make prominent decisions with regards to my tasks. Hence, high job satisfaction is gained from such.

Feedback about Results – This dimension refers to the direct knowledge of feedback from the actual work activities. Feedback can have a positive effect on a worker’s motivation as good feedback will certainly encourage employees to improve and maintain their performances. At my workplace, I receive little feedback, especially from managers. I think that improving the characteristics will allow me to gain increased job satisfaction.
