Answer #1

In Willie Nelson Music Co. v com case in 1985 the main issue was that whether the Willie Nelson Music Company is permitted to obtain motions for sealing the records up to the time of the trial in income tax deficiency to prevent embarrassment, annoyance, and oppression for Willie and Connie Nelson, nationally renowned personalities. On October 15, 1984 a notice of deficiency was issued to petitioners Willie H. Nelson and Connie Nelson for deficiencies in income tax and additions. Petitioners stated that both Willie H. and Connie Nelson as nationally renowned personalities are subject to "intense and continual" media scrutiny; and have been irreparably and seriously damaged by the public's impressions.

The Tax Court in United States held that the petitioners have not provided any probative evidence of good cause to outweigh the interests of public. Although they are nationally renowned personalities, however it is not a good enough cause to seal the records up to the time of the trial. As the good cause has not been furnished, the petitioners' motions will be denied. A party is required to bring forth testimony and factual evidence in the claims support for the harm that would occur due to the consequence of disclosure.
