Gary is a 12 month old who calls all women “mama.” This is very upsetting to his mother, Faith. Therefore, Faith her husband Dirk decide that they will only pay attention to Gary when he says “mama” to her. They have agreed to hug him and smile at him. When Gary says “mama” to other women, his parents ignore him and have instructed the women to as well.

  1. What is the desired behavior in this scenario?
  2. What is the positive reinforcer? Note, it is possible there is no positive reinforcer.
  3. What is the negative reinforcer? Note, it is possible there is no negative reinforcer.

  1. The desired behavior in this scenario is Gary calling only his mother ‘mama’.
  2. The positive reinforcer is hugging and smiling at him thus increasing the occurrence of the desired behaviour. Turning only when he class her mam is also a positive reinforcer.
  3. The negative reinforcer is the parents ignoring him when he calls other women as mam. Instructing other women to ignore him is also a kind of negative reinforcer. This would decrease the occurrence of the target behaviour.
