Valentine spots an antique table and chairs with a price tag showing $5,000 in an antique shop owned by Tristan. She offers $3,000. Tristan says no but counter offers $4,000. Valentine says let’s split the difference at $3,500. Tristan says no. Valentine says okay I will accept the $4,000 offer as her mobile phone was ringing noisily, Tristan at this stage had turned to serve another customer allowing Valentine to answer the mobile phone call. After completing the call Valentine places her credit card on the table for purchase of the antique table and chairs. Tristan states that he has just sold the table and chairs for $5,000. Valentine is furious as she really wants the table and chairs and she comes to you as a business associate and asks you for advice.

If Tristan has already sold the table to another customer logically Valentine can ask for another pair of same set of furniture. If available its obvious Tristan would take up the offer to $5000 as he made a successful sale earlier. Valentine is advised to continue negotiation and bring the bargain down till minimum the offer comes down to $4150.
