trying to find the percent yield for 4-methylcyclohexene

used

3.7826g (approx 4mL) of 4-methylcyclohexanol

1.0mL 85% phosphoric acid

16 drops concentrated sulfuric acid

obtained 2.1619g of product (4-methylcyclohexene)

my calculations to this point.

phosphoric acid: 1.0mL (1.885g/mL) = 1.885g *(0.85) = 1.553g*(1mol/97.995g) = 0.016mol*(96.17g/mol) = 1.539g 4-methylcyclohexene

4-methylcyclohexanol: 3.7826g(1mol/114.2g) = 0.0334mol *(96.17g/mol) = 3.173g 4-methylcyclohexene

which of these would I use for the theoretical yield? phosphoric acid or 4-methylcyclohexanol

Answer #1

We use H3PO4 and H2SO4 for dehydration purpose (removal of water), Hence they act as catalyst for the dehydration process and regenerated at the end of the reaction. Hence they are not the limiting reactant, rather 4-methylcyclohexanol is the limiting reactant here and decide the moles of product formed.

4-methylcyclohexanol ----(H3PO4/H2SO4----> 4-methylcyclohexene + H2O

Hence the theoretical yield of 4-methylcyclohexene is 3.173g

Percent yield = (2.1619 g / 3.173 g) * 100 = 68.13 %
