If you understand how to add vectors, you can skip to the final paragraph where the problem is stated.
To add vectors together, draw each vector on its own graph with the base on the origin and the arrow head drawn in the direction of the vector. The length of the vector is the magnitude. Make a right triangle with the vector as the hypotenuse. Use trig to find the two sides of the right triangle. The side along the X-axis is called the X component the the other side is called the Y component. Note that these two components must have a +or- sign to show direction. Add the X components together (keeping the +- signs during the addition) and separately add the Y components together.
You now have the (x,y) components of the answer. Make one more right triangle. Note that the X,Y components are the two sides of the triangle. Find the hypotenuse of the triangle, it is the magnitude of the answer. Find the angle in the triangle (by the origin), it is the direction.
Add these two vectors together and find the magnitude of the sum of the vectors. V1= 20 @ 90deg, V2=30 @ 180 deg

Activity 1-5: Breaking up Vectors into components Every vector can be thought of as two vectors that add together to form a right triangle. One ve point in the horizontal direction while the other will point in the vertical. tor will Ay Dy в, While you can determine the components of vectors Ä, B, C, and D visually above since there are grid lines, you can also use trigonometry to determine the values of each component. For each vector shown...

Activity 1-6: Addition and Subtraction of Vectors by Components If we add two vectors, we can break up the addition by components. For example Since the x-components point in the same (or opposite direction), we can add the values of the components separately to get the overall vector component in that direction. Once we have the overall components, we can get the magnitude of the vector and its direction by using Pythagorean's theorem and trigonometry. In what follows, we will...
In this lab you will be given two different sets of vectors to add together. In Activity 1, you will add position vectors: in Activity 2 you will add forces. Vector addition is an important concept in physics. To be well prepared for the lab you need to solve the following example. Make sure to show all your work in detail. Write the equations first, and then plug in the numerical values. Do not forget to do unit conversions. Use...
