The interconnection between testing and output is at the core of Quality 4.0, a branch of Industry 4.0. The aim is to allow manufacturers to produce better products at lower cost, to speed up their reaction to demand changes, to reduce market time and to achieve greater productivity. This is particularly true in automobile plants, where the improvement in efficiency and repeatability is successful not only in manufacturing, but also in prototyping and ramp-up processes, resulting in a much shorter time for a new vehicle to be put on the market. The aim is to reject the traditional concept of in-line, relative sensors–combined and backed up in a specialized measuring room by horizontal arm CMMs–and substitute it with a shop-based inspection system that provides high-precision, absolute data such as Nikon's Laser Radar, a next-generation CMM that produces precise, point-cloud-based function measurements in absolute coordinates. Using directly on the shop floor or in the measurement area, it provides quality measurements several times faster than a conventional CMM, significantly increasing the effectiveness of steps.

A twin robot-mounted Laser Radar system conducts total, precise, absolute measurements in minutes within the production line. The output timing is minimally interrupted, and there is no need for manual transfer to a CMM space. Off-line, the same device can be used as an alternative to a CMM, facilitating full BiW (body-in-white) measurements in less than two hours, relative to a traditional touch-probe CMM of up to eight hours. Using the same equipment, the off-line facility fails to be a barrier, because more capabilities are added quicker. Components need not be transferred to the CMM room for routine calculation, only to troubleshoot, solve sequencing issues and boost measurement Systematic calculation, just troubleshooting, relieving measuring issues and increasing the reliability of measurements. Using the same program running off-line and in-line makes performance reliable. Set-up as well as scripting becomes quicker, growing the performance and reducing bottlenecks.
