Attitudes consist of the evaluation we have about ourselves and the behaviours and concepts about the social world which is acquired from our experiences . Attitudes have a prominent role in determining our mood and health. Positive attitudes improves our wellbeing and health in the following ways.

  • It reduces the chance for depression
  • It increases our life expectancy
  • It reduces the chance for some acute illnesses such as asthma , cold etc
  • It reduces the risk of heart disease
  • It improves our overall out look about the social world and improves our personality
  • It reduces anxiety and increases a persons stress tolerance.

Social anxiety can be defined as extreme fear and anxiety of being negatively evaluated and judged or fear for social performance and shows significant distress and impairment in social functioning. Social phobia can be treated by following ways.

  1. Cognitive behaviour therapy - This is a kind of therapy which focuses on changing the irrational thoughts and feelings of the client through cognitive restructuring, social skills training, successive approximation etc.
  2. Medication- Usually medications such as benzodiazepines and selective serotonin re uptake inhibitors are used for treatment of social phobia

During the initial stages of social phobia counselling which include group therapies will be effective in treating social phobia.
