The area of data mining involves looking into (usually very large) data structures to discern patterns or relationships that might not be obvious, or that couldn't be seen through traditional querying of the data. The Laudons describe it as “discovery-driven.” Text mining is a special case of data mining where the analysis looks into text data that might have otherwise been treated as single blobs of undifferentiated data.
