2. You make a big bowl of punch that is carbonated
and has lots of ice in it. You place it in a cooler
(assume it is perfectly insulating) along with a
metal spoon that falls into the punch. After an
hour (enough time for everything to equilibrate,
with no more heat flow), about half of the ice has
melted. Rank the temperatures of the following
things in the punch:
A. The liquid
B. The ice
C. The spoon
D. The air in the little air bubbles that stick to
the sides of the cooler
When ever we have the coexistance of two different phases like this it is a phase change process.Only during phase change we can the coexistance of two phases.
Here it is the coexistance of solid (ice) and liquid (water) , ice and water coexists at 00C .
During that phase change process ,temperature of ice and water will be same 00C .
since the system is given enough time for everything to equilibrate, with no more heat flow.
Since there is no heat flow and sufficient time is given we can consider that steady state is reached .
Once steady state is reached all ,there will be no further temperature change inside the system.
therefore ,
The liquid, the ice ,the spoon , The air in the little air bubbles that stick to the sides of the cooler all are at same temperature .
A = B =C=D = 00C
