Donna Knope the manager of the Parks and Recreation Department for Pawnee is considering plans for her town’s new recreation center. Her recommendations will be presented to the members of the City Council at its regular monthly meeting next week.
A series of community meetings has been completed to obtain public input. The information from the public has been used to help the department planners identify what types of facilities the public wants and to estimate how much each facility might be used. The following table shows information on facility construction cost, annual operating expense, space requirements, and expected daily usage. Either a separate gymnasium, a separate fitness center, or a single unit combining the two must be built. This facility will provide lockers, showers, change rooms, and so forth, which will serve the entire recreation center. Either an outdoor or indoor swimming pool might be built, but not both. As many tennis courts can be provided as desired, up to a maximum of five.
The total amount of space available for the facilities is 45,000 square feet. Voters have approved a bond issue to provide up to $1.6 million to pay for constructing the facilities. The department’s annual operating expenses are limited to $300,000.
