During your lab on pigments, another group mixed the following chemicals in their attempt to form a new precipitate Hg2(NO3)2 (aq) Pb(NO3)2 (aq) and Ba(NO3)2 (aq). Nothing happened. SO they added (yes, to the mixture that already had three chemicals!) another chemical: NaBr (aq). A precipitate formed. What was it?

a) Hg2Br2

b) PbBr2

c) BaBr2

d) Two of the above

e) All three of the above

Answer #1

a) Hg2(NO3)2 (aq) + 2NaBr (aq) ----> Hg2Br2(s) + 2NaNO3(aq)

   Precipitate

b) Pb(NO3)2 (aq) + 2NaBr (aq) ----> PbBr2(s) + 2NaNO3(aq)

Precipitate

c) Ba(NO3)2 (aq) + NaBr (aq) ----> BaBr2(aq) + 2NaNO3(aq)

This shows that two of the above (option D) i.e. Hg2(NO3)2 (mercurous nitrate) and Pb(NO3)2 (lead nitrate) form precipitate with NaBr (sodium bromide).

    CH 111 - Introduction to Inorganic and Organic Chemistry Lab 10 - Exp. 341 Synthesis of Strontium lodate In this lab, we will perform a synthesis reaction to generate a desired product. Synthesis reactions are performed in many different industries including fertilizers, plastics, pharmaceuticals and many others. The goal in a synthesis reaction is to generate and obtain as much of the desired product as possible. In this synthesis, the reaction between KIO, (potassium iodate) and Sr(NO3)2 (strontium nitrate) produces...

Experiment 8 Name: Double Replacement Reactions Background: Some reactions have the net effect of causing the cation of cach reactant to trade places, forming a compound with the other anion. These reactions are known as double replacement reactions. In the example below (unbalanced equation), the barium and sodium cations switch places so that barium forms a product with sulfate while sodium forms...

    Microscale techniques: In today's experiment we will be using very small amounts of chemical reactants. This method is generally less expensive and more environmentally-friendly than traditional "test tube" chemistry. Some of the waste products produced in today's experiment, particularly those containing lead and barium, are harmful to the environment. By using such small amounts of chemical reactants we generate far less waste than by using larger scale methods. Procedure 1. Put on your safety goggles. Be sure to wear them...
