Without just giving me the answer at first -- does AgCl(s) dissolve in hot H2O?
(My first thought is that Cl- ions stay in solution normally but I don't know about Ag+ ions. And i don't want to cheat by looking up the Ksp.
Can you give me both a hint and then a few paragraphs of space before you tell me the final answer :) )

We can answer in two aspects ,

1. Lattice enthalpy overpowering hydration enthalpy

2. Fajan rule telling about covalent character

(1) the lattice enthalpy of AgCl is much more than that of hydration enthalpy of AgCl , thus AgCl is not able to dissociate in H2O . H2O is not able to pull out the ion from it's lattice.

(2) from fajan rule , we can say that AgCl has covalent character . We know that covalent compounds are insoluble in polar solvent (eg H2O ) due to absence of solute - solvent interaction.

Also AgCl is non polar compound , and ( like dissolves like ) . So AgCl is insoluble in water while soluble in CCl4 ( non polar solvent )
