Define the following terms in your own words: mission of operations, order winner, order qualifier, and distinctive competence.

  • Mission of operations – what a company needs to do to accomplish their goals
  • Order winner – what a company needs to do to attract customers
  • Order qualifier – the ideas or objects that support the order winner
  • Distinctive competence – a strategy or idea that is one of a kind

For the organizations listed in Q7, A college library, a hotel, and a small manufacturing firm ,describe inputs, transformation process, and outputs of the production system.

A college library

Inputs: The library staff allocates materials for use by students and staff such as books, encyclopedias, reference materials, and equipment.

Transformation process: Financial manager allocates funds and uses those funds to purchase; books, shelves, equipment, materials, and facilities. Once products and goods are collected, library staff is then tasked with organizing and preparing them for use by students and staff.

Output: The use of products and services by students and staff.

A hotel

Input: Physical building, rooms, living amenities, staff, food, and money.

Transformation process: inputs symbiotically combine to become a home away from home for guests.

Output: Guests utilize goods and services through monetary exchange.

A small manufacturing firm

Input: Raw goods, labor, utilities, funds, and information.

Transformation: depends on goods but usually raw goods are carefully tracked during the transformation process to ensure efficiency and quality. Physical work for the transformation of raw goods to finalized goods and services, and finally packaging materials for sale.

Output: Goods and services ready for sale to customers.
