Bismuth subsalicylate is used as an antacid. Bismuth reduces the flow of fluids and electrolytes into the stomach. Also, it has bactericidal properties which will selectively destroy harmful bacteria. This property makes it a suitable antacid.

Bismuth is the most metallic in the nitrogen group and hence it neutralises the acidic nature of the stomach to the required level.
