The main reasons or primary source of legionella infection or outbreak is the airborne spread of infection which is caused by inhalation of infected or contaminated aerosols. Legionella pneumophila is a bacterium and are generally found in water sources or purpose built water systems. It causes Legionnaires' disease.

It can be spread by following sources:

  • Whirlpool spas like Jacuzzi
  • Shower heads
  • Air conditioners
  • Sink faucets
  • Hot and cold water systems
  • Humidifiers
  • Artificial fountains
