Think about all the data that is collected about you every day. List some technologies and information systems, and companies you engage in that collect data about you. Does this information serve you better as a consumer? Do you have any concerns by the data collected about you? Why or why not? Give some examples! Should collection of data be restricted? Why or why not?
Answer: With the development of the information and communication technologies (ICT), there are a number of technologies and information systems that are used by the companies to collect the data about their consumers. The companies use a number of advanced and sophisticated software for collecting the data about their customers. For example, the companies use advanced software that capture the behavioural information of the customers visiting their websites. The companies use customer relationship management (CRM) software that captures different information about the customers. There are many websites that ask for the customer’s credentials before providing them access to the content they have. Apart from this there is a number of software that captures information about the customers from different sources. The companies also purchase information from the third party sources. This information is often used for providing better and relevant products and services to the customers but at the same time they are often misused for other purpose as well. Firstly many companies collect such data without informing customers and this is a violation of privacy. At the same time the companies also sell such information to the other companies for money and this again violates the privacy of a person. Hence collection of such data is also a cause of concern. Collection of such data should not be restricted but controlled. The companies should not be allowed to collect data without the consent of the consumers as it violates the privacy.

Think about an application in which at least two completely different wireless data communications technologies are used simultaneously, to accomplish a single task like making a phone call, for example. This is something that most of us use every day, but we seldom think about it.
When you purchase a new smart device, do you think about what information can be accessed/hacked when you use it? Give examples of any concerns you may have.
Minimum Data Sets for Personal Healthcare Records Part 1 Medical facilities have implemented the use of Electronic Healthcare Records (EHRs) for a variety of reasons. Some facilities implemented their use for financial reasons while other facilities implemented their use to better serve their patient population. No matter the reason for their implementation, EHRs can be an asset to any medical facility. One problem with EHRs is that there is no standardized set of data that each EHR collects, commonly referred...
Discussion Questions Think about some of your friends and what you have discovered by visiting their homes. Do they buy different things than you do? If so, why? How might a company distinguish you from them in terms of its targeting? Is it always harder to find new customers than it is to retain old ones or does it depend on the business you're in? Does one-to-one marketing have to be expensive? How can small organizations interact with their customers...
Given the increasingly popular topic of inequality, do you think IT evolution help increase or decrease inequality (either within competitive business market among companies or income/wealth inequality among individuals)? Why? Give some concrete examples of specific technologies to illustrate your point.
Cryptography is used by just about everyone on the Internet every day. It is used to keep some of the most sensitive information private. It can be used by criminals to orchestrate their crimes. Do you think encryption mechanisms should have some type of "backdoor" to allow authorities access to data? If so, what should those mechanisms be? You may need to do some research on this topic to address all aspects of it. Discuss your position on this and...
Accounting software systems collect vast amounts of data about the economic events experienced by a company and about the parties with whom the company engages, such as suppliers and customers. Business decision-makers take advantage of this wealth of information by using data analytics, which often employs both software and statistics, to draw inferences and make more informed business decisions. As both data access and analytical software improve, the use of data analytics to support decisions is becoming increasingly common at...
Large organizations with the help of computer technology collect vast sums of personal information from every one of us. Government agencies have collected increasingly large amounts of personal data from us in recent years -- but perhaps more troubling is the even greater amount of data being collected by private companies. You may have noticed that the banner advertisements on your computer screen are customized to cater to your particular interests. This is because companies like Google collect information about...
Before writing a research paper you should write The Methods. The methods is one of the briefest sections of a research paper. In the methods, you need to explain how and why you gathered and analyzed data in enough detail that the reader could easily replicate your study. At this stage, you are only proposing how you will do this but note that after you collect data (perform the methods), you will revise this section into past tense to reflect...
Businesses collect and store data on us all of the time. They use this data in marketing, providing products and services and conducting business with us. Have you ever thought about all the places where your information might be stored digitally? Think about the myriads of databases out there that might be capturing and storing your information as you conduct transactions over the internet or even locally where you visit your doctor, dentist or banker. Virtually all organizations and companies...
