For much of the second half of the 20th century, the Cold War has become a dominant influence on many aspects of American society. This intensified due to antagonistic ideals representing capitalism and democracy between the United States and the Soviet Union, reflecting socialism and authoritarianism. After the Second World War, the two dominant world powers became a global conflict between the Americans and the Soviets. The Cold War differed from most conflicts because it was just as much a war of deception as a war of military engagement. In the name of stopping communist expansionism, the Korean and Vietnam Wars are important examples of American military involvement.
While some communists have been rooted out, many more lives have been ruined on the basis of weak evidence, unsubstantiated accusations, and people's refusal to participate in hearings or answer questions. Anti-communist fervor trickled down to also have local effects. For example, Southern California's "Better American League collected the names of nearly 2 million suspected subversives in the area" Many of these individuals were shot, blacklisted, and based on these charges had their civil rights violated.
Although it wouldn't be accurate to say that the civil rights movement occurred because of the Cold War, the Cold War backdrop helped people understand that American society's facets were counter to the ideals we professed to stand for and that changes were needed. While the Cold War's social consequences were mainly domestic, mostly on an international scene, political battles between the Soviet Union and the United States were fought.
New cultural structures and a diverse subculture arose as the period progressed, embracing novelty, new Bohemian incarnations, and the emergence of the hippie and other alternative lifestyles. This support of innovation is especially notable in the works of British Invasion bands like the Beatles and filmmakers whose works have become much less limited by censorship. Many other creative artists, writers, and thinkers have helped define the counterculture movement within and across many disciplines. The suit and particularly the wearing of hats experienced a decline in everyday dressing. Dressing based on jeans has become the timeless style for both men and women.
