I am doing a lab on extracting caffeine from soda using methylene chloride. What is the main reaction that occurs?

*caffeine acts as a base and forms an acid with a PKa of 3.6 when protonated. NaOH is added before methylene chloride to make the pH ~8.

Answer #1

The basic character of caffeine is because of the presence of lone pair of electrons on N - atom.

The main concept behind the extraction process is as follows:

NaOH is added before extraction with organic solvent inorder to make caffeine into neutral form (more soluble in non-polar solvents) rather than in ionic form(more soluble in water).

The objective of this laboratory is to determine the molarity of a hydrochloric acid solution using a known concentration of sodium hydroxide as the titrant. volume of HCl in flask: 25.00 mL the net ionic equation for the reaction is: H+(aq) + OH-(aq) --> H2O(l) I don't have the data...

Acid Base lab INSTRUCTIONS Acid-base indicators are used to let you know whether the solution you are working with is acidic or basic. We have many acid-base indicators available to us today, but the first indicators were made from natural compounds. The indicator that you will be making comes from purple cabbage and is simply called cabbage extract indicator. Procedure: Goggle red cabbage as an acid-base indicator....

I have to finish a lab report in which we conducted an experiment with NaOH and an unknown acid. Essentially we added varying amounts of NaOH (from 2.5mL up to 30.00mL and a certain amount of deionized water) to an unchanging volume of unknown acid (10mL). While doing these reactions we calculated the change in temperature from before and after the reaction. I'm confused as to how to determine if the acid is monoprotic or diprotic from this information. Online...
