Nekesa believes that people with autism lack empathy. And then she meets Meinhard, who has autism. How might Nekesa perceive and interact with Meinhard? Explain this in terms of a schema held by Nekesa. What might assimilation and accommodation look like for Nekesa?
When people are trying to make sense of the world around us,
they do so by forming schemas for the things and structures that
they see around them. This is helpful as through the help of
schemas they can quickly make sense of the world but also is
harmful as at times this can also lead to stereotyping. In the case
of Nekesa, her schema of autistic people leads her to believe that
they lack empathy.
However, when presented with new information, the schemas can adapt
to change through a process that is known as assimilation. Then the
schemas are adjusted to better enhance our experiences and this
process is known as accommodation.
In the case of Nekesa, if Meinhard lacks empathy then this new
information will be assimilated comfortably in the scema of
autistic people that Nekesa has. However, the situation will be
different if Meinhard is indeed empathetic. In that case, the
information will have to be accommodated in the schema and at times
a whole new schema structure need to be created to accommodate the
new information.

the preconceived ideas people have about the aging process and people who have become old. These are often stereotypes, like a grumpy old man, a slow driver, an old woman who can't use a computer. Sometimes they seem to be nice, like assuming an elderly woman has grandchildren and likes to talk about them. But often they are used to avoid including older people, (would you think to ask an older person to volunteer at a FunRun by handing out...
