1) Gasoline is primarily octane.

2) Density of octane = 703 kg / m 3

We know that, 1 m 3 = 1000 L , therefore, Density of octane = 703 kg / 1000 L

3) Heat of combustion of octane = 46.8 MJ / kg

4) How much energy would 100 L of gasoline produce?

We have relation, density = Mass / Volume

Mass = density volume

Mass of octane = ( 703 kg / 1000 L )   100 L = 70.3 kg

Gasoline is primarily octane. Therefore, mass of gasoline = 70.3 kg

We have given, 46.8 M J energy is produced per kg combustion of gasoline.

Amount of energy produced by combustion of 70.3 kg gasoline = 70.3 kg ( 46.8 MJ / kg )

= 3290.04 MJ

ANSWER : Combustion of 100 L gasoline will produce 3290 MJ energy.
