In the state of California, the mean for Introduction to calculus is known to be µ=74, with s = 12.3. A certain class of 170 students had a mean of 76. You wish to know whether the class mean is statistically different from the provincial mean. Use an alpha level of 0.05 and state the critical value of z this corresponds to. Show the calculation of each component of the z value separately. Report your conclusion in a sentence that acknowledges the type of error possible.

Answer #1

Below are the null and alternative Hypothesis,
Null Hypothesis, H0: μ = 74
Alternative Hypothesis, Ha: μ ≠ 74

Rejection Region
This is two tailed test, for α = 0.05
Critical value of z are -1.96 and 1.96.
Hence reject H0 if z < -1.96 or z > 1.96

Test statistic,
z = (xbar - mu)/(sigma/sqrt(n))
z = (76 - 74)/(12.3/sqrt(170))
z = 2.12

P-value Approach
P-value = 0.034
As P-value < 0.05, reject the null hypothesis.

    1. The current accepted mean of Brinell hardness is 170. An engineer measured the Brinell hardness of 25 pieces of ductile iron that were sub- critically annealed. The resulting data were: 170 167174 179 179 187 179 183 179 156 163 156 187 156 167 156 174 170 183179174 179 170 159187 The engineer hypothesized that the mean Brinell hardness of all such ductile iron pieces is greater than 170 and is actually 172.5 with a standard deviation of 10.31....

    1. A mathematics professor believes that the performance of students taking an elementary calculus course has declined in recent years. The professor decides to reuse a final exam that was first administered 10 years ago. At that time the mean score was 81 with s=10, for the 50 students in the section taught by that professor When given to the current class of 53 students, who observed essentially the same set of lectures, the mean is 75 with s=15. If...

    PLEASE ANSWER ALL PARTS The mean number of English courses taken in a two-year time period by male and female college students is believed to be about the same. An experiment is conducted and data are collected from 29 males and 16 females. The males took an average of four English courses with a standard deviation of 0.8. The females took an average of five English courses with a standard deviation of 1.1. Are the means statistically the same? (Use...
