Identifying norms is important within a team as it provides
important information about the expectations and behavior of the
team members working on a shared common goal. Norms are developed
to define the ground rules of the team. Norms include the manner in
which team members interact and communicate with each other,
expected working hours, attendance in team meetings,
decision-making approach in a team, agenda, supporting each other,
time management, listening and reporting etc. Overall norms are
general guidelines established in a team to improve effective
communication among the team members.
Clear communication is essential for team development as it
enhances information sharing, transparency and provides a sense of
direction to the entire team. Unclear communication in team results
in conflicts and clear communication is essential to solve the
problems and resolve the conflicts within the team.
A conflict arose in my team due to the improper delegation of work
and improper communication. One of the team members assumed that
she was allocated more workload compared to others. The team member
conflicted and showed less interest in the work. This affected the
entire team performance. The team member never expressed her
opinion in the team meetings and the problem continued. The team
leader identified the problem after the team members complained
about her conflicting activities and low interest and involvement
in the team. The team member called for a team meeting and
presented the workload of each team member along with their
deadlines in a transparent manner. She understood that everyone has
an equal workload and started to work to achieve her task within
the deadline. This open communication enhanced transparency in the
team and team members showed full commitment in completing their
respective tasks within the deadline resulting in improved team
performance as a whole. This example indicates the importance of
effective communication in a team.
