On what level of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs would you place each of the following decisions and WHY: (a) buying health insurance, (b) going skiing, (c) following a low-fat diet?
Describe in your own words the terms GOGNITIVE DISSONANCE and DECISION FREEDOM. Describe an example (from yourself, relative, or friend) of cognitive dissonance after making the decision of attending a health care service, and another example applying decision freedom in selecting health care services.
a) Buying health insurance – This comes under security and safety needs of Maslow’s theory as buying a health insurance ensures physical and economic security of an individual in future from health threats
b) Going skiing – This is a social need as the individual seeks to get recognition among the skiing community by going skiing
c) Following a low-fat diet – This is a self-actualization need to avoid or prevent or reduce the risk of obesity, diabetes and heart disease in future and act as a role model for others
Cognitive dissonance is a state of discomfort experienced mentally by a person or an individual holding contradictory ideas, conflicting behaviors and differing beliefs leading to attitude alteration. An example in a healthcare setup is individuals continue smoking (behavior) despite knowing it causes cancer (cognition) resulting in a state of Cognitive dissonance. This happens with smokers deciding to attend the healthcare service but deciding against it afterwards due to Cognitive dissonance
Decision freedom indicates the equally valued alternatives including behavioral, affective and cognitive consequences in making a decision. The decision freedom is used in selecting healthcare services based on the need and requirements of the patient. An example is a person is suffering from fever and makes a decision to visit a general physician to get cure from the fever considering the consequences of fever
