(Answer) Social imagination is the ability to look at a situation from a different social perspective. This perspective is ideally one where the types of interaction, social theories and patterns are easily noticed and analysed.
A good example of how it can be used would be to be a kind of referee in society. This is where an individual leaves personal biases and steps back in order to be impartial and analyse a situation rationally and through the lens of sociology.
In order to acquire a social imagination, a student of sociology can train him/herself to avoid being visceral or emotionally invested in social situations. This should be replaced with a logical investment and the desire to understand everyday life from a theoretical perspective. An individual should build the curiosity to learn the cause of a particular behaviour, analyse its effects, notice and account for all necessary variables and be socially aware.
Inculcating such a social imagination would lead to more descriptive theories and studies in the field of sociology and perhaps aid psychological research too.
