Prior to the industrial revolution, most of the carbon in circulation on Earth moved from the atmosphere into photosynthetic organisms and and then back into the atmosphere through cellular respiration in plants, animals, and bacteria. If we did not start digging up and burning fossil fuels about 200 years ago, the total amount of carbon in circulation would have remained roughly the same.

True.

The carbon cycle in the nature is in balance. The amount released by organisms and other natural processes into the atmosphere is absorbed by plants to photosynthesize. So overall the amount of carbon in the Atmosphere remained roughly same. So there was a circulation balance. But after the initiation of fossil fuel extraction the carbon which was trapped and stored underground, is continuously being added to the atmosphere creating imbalances. That is the reason to concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere has reached around 400 ppm from 240 ppm after industrial revolution.
