DISCUSSION QUESTIONS: Some employers have instituted unlimited vacation policies, which allow their staff more flexibility to take time off when they need it. Supporters say this helps boost employee productivity and makes it easier for employers to attract and retain top talent. Critics argue that unlimited vacation policies could create resentment among employees and actually discourage people from taking time off, because it looks bad. What do you think are the challenges in implementing such a policy? Will you like your organization to offer unlimited vacations? Why or why not?
Following are the challenges in implementing unlimited vacation policy:
1. One of the challenges with this policy is it can get misused by the employees. The employees may take leave for weeks or even for months without having the fear of losing their job.
2. Another challenge is overlapping vacations. In the absence of a system to track the employees’ vacation requests, it may happen that several employees take a vacation at the same time. This can place an undue burden on the remaining employees of the organization or can adversely affect the project timelines.
Yes, I would like my organization to provide an unlimited vacation policy because it will be advantageous to both organization as well as employees. It will help the organization to attract high-performance candidates and retain them. The employees will get enough to relax and rejuvenated themselves which will lead to their increased productivity. The policy will encourage more work-life balance as employees will get time to focus on other aspects of life as well. Such a policy will contribute to a happier workforce which is capable of coming up with new ideas, thus, promoting innovation.
