What is a linux?

• Linux is an operating system just like Windows XP ,Windows 7,Windows 8, Mac OS X.
• Primary and major task of an operating system is to manages hardware & resources of the system. Simply it is a communication between User application(software) and hardware.
• It is a open source operating system. means any one can download it and use it ,there is no need of any licence for run it unlike Windows Operating system.
• It is written in C language.
• Used in smartphones,cars ,servers ,computer and home application.

Development & History:

Before that lets understand Kernel:It is a low level of OS which manages CPU,Memory,Devices, Simply we can say that it is the heart of the OS.

UNIX:It is the family of multitasking and allowed of multi user operating systems.

• UNIX was firstly developed at AT&Bell laboratories in 1971 by the scientist Ken Thompson, Dennis Ritchie, Douglas McIlroy in america.
• Linus Torvalds had started working on the MINIX (OS which was licenced and limited up to the education) and then done a on the replacement of MINIX and created the first LINUX -kernel.
• Torvald had done a work on the GNU project(Collaboration of mass of free software projects).
• His primary target was to create a simple,compatible and comprised operating system with free software.
• At 1991 torvald had release a LINUX-kernel to the world.
• Then after some community of developers had worked on GNU project and create a complete , free operating system widely known as Linux.

Components of OS:

• Bootloader:The software that manages the booting process of an operating system.
• Kernel:Manages the CPU,memory And Devices of the computer.
• Daemons: These includes background services like Printing,scheduling etc.Start either during boot time or after log in of user.
• Graphical: Server:Sub-system that display graphics on your monitor known as X server or 'X'
• Shell:This is the shell-command line by command we can control the whole computer.
