I am doing a written report on how hydroprower goes from a hydroelectric dam to some ones home. I need a summary on the circuit break and all of the different parts and what they do. Thank you in advance.
The main parts here are dam, turbine, generator, transmission lines.
Dam - They are used to hold back water so that a reservoir is formed behind the main wall. It raises the water level of the river to create falling water and helps to control the flow of water.
Turbine - a large rotating drum like structure at the bottom of dam with large, and strong bladed. When water from the dam strikes the turbine blade, the turbine starts to spin More the force of water, more will be the speed. The turbine converts kinetic energy of falling water into the mechanical energy.
Generator - This is most important part. This is an induced EMF based generator where a large coil roates in a strong magnetic field. It is connected to the turbine by shafts so when the turbine spins, it causes the generator to spin.
It converts the mechanical energy from the turbine into electric energy.
Transmission lines - These are used to transmit power from hydro plants to homes. Note that we need to use transformers along the way, so that an appropriate voltage can be achieved which is safe for home appliances.
