A student did light induced free radical bromination reaction of 3-methylpentane. The 1H NMR of the products' mixture revealed that it contains mostly 3-bromo-3-methyl pentane and smaller amount of 2-bromo-3-methyl-pentane. Signal at 3.7 ppm, with the integration area under the signal 0.6 square units, belongs to the proton attached to the second carbon atom in 2-bromo-3-methyl-pentane. Signal at 1.9 ppm, with the integration area under the signal 11.5 square units, belongs to the protons of the methyl group at third carbon atom of 3-bromo-3-methyl-pentane.
