Fuel gas

It is a mixture of hydrocarbons, hydrogen and carbon dioxide. It is broadly classified into manufactured gas and Natural (petroleum) gas. Following are the uses of fuel gas:-

• It is used for gas lighting (production of artificial light by combustion of gas)
• It is also used in gas burners as well as in Bunsen burners in laboratory.
• Used in gas heater,stoves, vehicles etc.

The country which uses fuel gas the most is United States.

Gasoline

It is derived from petroleum by the distillation of crude oil and is highly flammable. It is a mixture of paraffin,olefin and cycloalkanes. It is characterised by the octane number. Following are the uses of gasoline:-

• It is used as a primary fuel in most of the ignited internal combustion engines of vehicles.
• Highly pure and refined gasoline is used as aviation fuel.
• Used in tools and instruments used in farming, construction etc.
• Used as fuel in generators and portable power sources.

United States is the country which contributes 44% towards the total consumption of the world and is the top consumer.

Diesel oil

It is a liquid fuel which consists mainly saturated hydrocarbons such as paraffin and aromatic hydrocarbons in lesser amount. It is characterised by cetane number. Following are the uses of diesel oil:-

• Used as a fuel in diesel engine where it's ignition don't require any spark.
• It is used in heavy duty vehicles such as trucks,SUVs etc.
• It is also used for overland shipping.
• Used as fuel in water mode transportation vehicles.

The top consumer of diesel oil is United States.

Heavy oil

Heavy oil is the residue of the crude oil distillation process. It's density and viscosity is higher than that of light crude oil. It contains asphalts and resins in it. Following are the uses of heavy oil.

• It is used as fuel in marine ship engines.
• Used as a fuel in older steam driven locomotives.
• Used as a fuel in power-plants.

Again United States is the top consumer of heavy oil.
