Individual work

Individual work is separating and allocating the work for an individual person where the single person takes sole responsibility for the completion of the work.

Teamwork

Teamwork is the collaboration of two or more people to complete the common goal. A team of individuals is interrelated to complete the work.

Advantages of Individual work

Allocating individual work allows employees to work at their own pace. This helps them in achieving work-life balance. Employees can schedule their to-do list based on their comfort. This allows the employees to show their full potential at work and can solely get the credits for their work. Mostly all the employees will perform similarly with less performance difference. It is easier for organizations to identify the top performers and motivate them further. Individual working styles are more suitable to maintain a flexible working environment. One can easily improve their decision-making skills and tendency to work without any support and that is essential for the improvement. This improves the autonomous working nature of employees and they try to solve the problem on their own without the involvement of others. The team conflicts can be avoided by working individually where the level of controls can be avoided. Individual working style increases the confidence of the employees and they can perform the task alone without any interference. Employees will not face any external pressure; however, employees need to complete the work without any delay. Unlike teamwork, social loafing can be avoided by working individually. Social loafing is some employees contribute very less for task completion. So, with individual work, the employees with poor contribution and performance can be easily removed from the organization. For example, an individual working style is used in gardening activities where each individual takes care of different plots and completes their tasks. So, the employer can easily identify who can efficient enough to complete the work and who is lagging behind. And also, in lot of IT companies, individual tasks are allocated to people for completion. So, individual working style is used here and one takes the sole responsibility in completing the knowledge. This independent working style helps them to upgrade in order to complete the tasks.

Disadvantages of Individual work

There are a few disadvantages with individual working style. One single employee is responsible for the work and sometimes, it takes a long time due to lack of ideas. Not everyone is good at solving all types of problems. So, approaching and consulting with others is necessary to offer quick solutions to any problem. Sometimes, employees need to work alone without any support and this leads to a tough stressful situation to employees. Skills set of each and every employee are different and the application of different knowledge is necessary to solve the problem and to improve the output. With individual working style, accessibility to skills are very poor and this leads to confusion at times. Creativity and innovation are very less in individual working style because the ideation of only one person is considered. Motivation is challenging with individual working style because individuals need to self-motivate at the time of hardships. It is difficult to work on any complex problems with individual working style and in this situation, efforts from a team of people are expected. Unavailability of individuals is a serious problem because the work cannot be completed on time. Success and failure depend on the work of one person and so, no external advice is provided to improve the quality of the work. Example, In the IT industry, very complex problems are provided to individuals. The stress level of employees is higher in the organizations that follow the individual working style. As an individual, one needs to sort out the problem that happens with their tasks. This also delays the progress of the project due to the inability of one person to deliver the task on-time. Here, employees are forced to manage with their own skills and in the knowledge-based organization, external support is mandatory irrespective of personal skills.

An organization needs to follow the combination of teamwork and individual working style to complete the tasks efficiently with the greater outcome.
