An industry emits “X” µg/sec of a conservative pollutant from a single process at ground level (no stack). There is a small mobile home village directly downwind a distance of 0.2 km away, and the village is only 0.1 km wide. The concentration of this pollutant must not exceed a maximum concentration of 5 µg/m3 at any point when the plume touches down. The town is located on a flat plain and has constant, strong winds that blow from west to east. Plume rise=50m Wind speed at effective stack height =12 ?? ?????? (independent of changes in effective height)

(a) (0.03 Points) What can the maximum source strength “X” be in µg/sec under unstable conditions?

(b) (0.04 Points) Will this maximum concentration occur in the town, or beyond the town under unstable conditions? Defend your answer and explain how you determined your conclusion.

(c) (0.03 Points) If the maximum source strength is increased to 6×107 µg/sec, will adding a stack 50 meters tall stack prevent people from breathing air with concentrations that are greater than the allowable maximum allowable concentration? Assume adding stack does not change plume loft. Explain why or why not.
