Why would the analgesic drug crushed in the mortar and pestle? For an infrared spectroscopy experiment?

Generally most of the analgesic drug manufactured by the companies remains as a mixture of compounds,if we use this for the characterisation techniques this will give very bad and complicated results.to purify the analgesic drug and to extract the active form of analgesic two steps are followed.1.first it crushed with morter and pestle and dissolved in a solvent like methanol,then by centrifuge it.and 2. With this product column chromatography using active alumina is done.then by evaporating the solvent we can get the active and pure form of the analgesic.then it is characterised by infrared techniques by forming KBr pellet with this.
