Do you believe, or think, that citizens of the United States have as much control and freedom as a Citizen of Athens? Was Athenian citizenship limited? Did those limitations actually mean that a majority of people living in Athens had no rights? So....was Athens....Free?
Yes, the model of democracy is possible in large nation states. Citizens of USA probably have greater freedom in a lot of contexts but lesser in some other. There are greater freedom and accountability guaranteed constitutionally. There is media and the internet helping disseminate information. More people have political voice as the rights are distributed in a more egalitarian manner.
