Hi. I did an aldol condensation experiment with KOH pellets, anisaldehyde and acetone. Crystals were recovered using vacuum filtration and washed with distilled water. It was then recrystallized using ethanol. The percent yield came to be 20.58%, which is pretty low. The melting point of the final product is 69-73 C. The literature melting point is 158-160 C.
Please list things that might have contributed to the low precent yield. Why is the melting point way off? Is this normal for aldol condensation? Thank you!
