FACT SHEET - CORANA VIRUS affecting the Nurses and Patients

Introduction

Coronaviruses are found in avian and mammalian species. They resemble each other in morphology and chemical structure: for example, the coronaviruses of humans and cattle are antigenically related. There is no evidence, however, that human coronaviruses can be transmitted by animals. In animals, various coronaviruses invade many different tissues and cause a variety of diseases, but in humans they are only proved to cause mild upper respiratory infections, i.e. common colds.

How corona affected Nurses

During their shifts, which can run up to 12 hours, these doctors and nurses must be fully covered in protective equipment, which they cannot remove for even so much as a glass of water or a bathroom break. When they finish their shift and remove their mask, they bear deep imprints physical and emotional of their efforts to ease the crisis. They are fight against the disease for the sake of the people.

  • Nurses detailed a lack of coordination between governments and hospitals on protocols that could help stem the outbreak, with mask shortages a notable example.
  • Nurses were already working at full capacity before the outbreak, and many are facing a choice between paying their bills and calling in sick if they get exhausted or even catch the coronavirus.
  • In the case of a "domino effect" in which nurses begin to get sick, a nurse staffing crisis would make the health crisis worse, one nurse said.

Coronavirus affecting Patients

WHO says about 80% of people with Covid-19 recover without needing any specialist treatment. Only about one person in six becomes seriously ill “and develops difficulty breathing”.

People may be sick with the virus for 1 to 14 days before developing symptoms. The most common symptoms of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) are fever, tiredness, and dry cough. Most people (about 80%) recover from the disease without needing special treatment.

More rarely, the disease can be serious and even fatal. Older people, and people with other medical conditions (such as asthma, diabetes, or heart disease), may be more vulnerable to becoming severely ill.

People may experience:

  • cough
  • fever
  • tiredness
  • difficultybreathing (severe cases)
