As a career development session plan here are the steps I will
follow:
Beginning of the
session:
- At the beginning of the session, I would like to make the
employee comfortable and break the ice.
- It is important to maintain the right eye contact and look
directly while speaking. Showing interest in listening, having a
smile when required etc helps to begin the session with right
expectations and makes the person feel at a comfort level.
- The nearness and posture are other important factors to
maintain in the right manner at the beginning of the session.
I will begin by asking general things about the organisation and
if employees prefer business approach I will set the right
expectation setting and define the flow /objectives of the career
development session.
Strategies to build
the rapport:
- Small talk - Break the ice and talk about recent happenings and
developments in the office.
- It is important to acknowledge listening as it helps to build
the rapport.
- To establish rapport is important to speak positively, show
support and appreciation when required and acknowledge when it is
needed.
Strategies to
build trust:
- To build trust it is important to give authentic feedback on
the performance.
- The purpose needs to be defined clearly that it is focused on
job satisfaction and productivity.
- Lay down emphasis that the plan is to develop a career
plan.
Communication of the
key goals of the session:
- Show the right intent by communication that the goal of this
session is towards developing and strengthening employee's
competency and skill areas.
- Out of tell and tell, tell and listen and problem-solving
techniques I will use the right one for communication depending on
the individual.
- The problem-solving technique has a helper approach and works
in most cases while communicating.
It is important to communicate
- that the plan is to know how to become more effective as a
supervisor to improve the performance,
- it is important to ask for a description of the success in the
current role,
- knowing part of jobs liked and disliked,
- skills knowledge and abilities that need to be
strengthened
- desires and growth objectives
It is important to convey and understand their goals, how
can it be achieved, the expectation to achieve the same and the
importance of continued success.
