Thre major types of nuclear materials regulated by NRC-
1. Special nuclear material= This is the type of materials that are boosted with isotopes of Uranium 235 or Uranium 233. These materials have uranium 235 content greater than which is usually available in nature. These types of materials do not entitle the source nuclear materials. Plutonium and Uranium 235 come under this category of special nuclear material.
2. Source material= Source materials have uranium 235 content lower or equal to the content which is usually available in nature. Thorium or a combination of thorium comes under this category. Most of the thorium and uranium ores are source materials.
3. By products= This is the type of nuclear material created during the production of Spacial nuclear materials as by-products or waste materials. Any of the sources of radium 226 is also included in this group of products. If any material has been radioactivated using the particle accelerator, it will also be titled under by-products.
