Why would it be difficult to separate crystal violet using a of silica gel column?
Crystal violet is an organic dye purple colour. CV is Triarylmethane dye. It contains both nonpolar part and polar aromatic rings. Silica is also highly Polar. Due to higher polarity of crystal blue, also it contains three nitrogen atoms, it binds very tightly with silica gel.
Very strong interaction of the dye with silica gel. Therefore all these contributing attractive forces donor allow to elute ththe dye easily.
Really it's great task to remove this dye from silica gel column due to presence of three nitrogen atom. Each nitrogen has a lone pair of electrons which would be attacks on empty d orbital of silicon atom in silica and forms strong bonding.
These are some reasons due to which it's difficult to separate from silica gel coloumn.
