Two masses (m1 < m2) are connected via a string that passes over a pulley of mass + mp and radius = R (a solid disk). Mass m1 sits on a horizontal surface with a coefficient of kinetic friction, µk.

a) draw a free body diagram for each mass and the pulley. Label the forces, showing the relation between diagrams as necessary. Indicate the direction of any acceleration and choose appropriate coordinate systems.

b) write down and simplify a Newton's 2nd law equation for each free body diagram.

c) use the equations from b) to obtain an expression for the acceleration of mass m2 in terms of the parameters m1, m2, mp, µk and g (acceleration due to gravity)

d) if the wheel was the shape of a bicycle (or hoop) how would the formula be changed?
