Answer #1

Fins are used to increase heat transfer from the surfaces. The fin material has high thermal conductivity which will allow more heat transfer from the suraface(walls). The fin is exposed to the flowing fluid which cools or heats it. It can have any cross section area depending upon the requirement and space like circular, rectangular, taper etc. Its sole purpose is to increase heat transfer from the surfaces.

Examples

1. Cooling of electric motors, transformers etc

2. Cooling of electronic equipments like chips, IC boards etc

3. Radiators for automobiles.
