A Good Man is Hard to Find by Flannery O' Connor is a story about a family and its nuances. It is a story about how the family dynamics plays out during times of life threatening incidents and how characters transform themselves. All characters are progressive in the story and the ending is dark as the whole family is systematically murdered. The author highlights the facts of how people carry their own notions. There is a stigma that every character suffers from. The story can be characterized as a short story and has a dramatic theme. The story was first published in 1953. The story starts with the major characters Bailey who wishes to take his family on a summer vacation to Florida but his mother who in the whole story is referred to as the Grandmother wants him to drive to East Tennessee where she has her friends. She rationales around that her grandchildren have never been to the East. She also provides a point through a news article about an escaped murderer who is on the run in Florida called the ‘Misfit’. The grandmother has her own notions about the right and the wrong. The carrying of her cat during the trip secretly and also encouraging her grandchildren to go against their father wishes shows her notions and also the way she justifies her actions highlights her stigma.

As the family travels the grandmother is the most talkative and is engaging her grandchildren with games and jokes. The grandchildren show their rude behavior towards her. There are many disdainful comments and the grandmother is continuously speaking about the right doings. The grandmother was dressed in her best clothes. She had pointed out a very negative stance that if anything happens to her then she needs to be remembered as a lady with class and grace. During the trip they stop at a diner in a town Timothy. The grandmother here speaks to the owner about the escaped prisoner Misfit. She agrees how the world has degenerated and refers to the phrase ‘a good man is hard to find’.

As the family returns to driving the grandmother narrates a spooky story about a mysterious house with a secret panel and this catches the attention of the grandchildren who instantly want to visit the house. Bailey reluctantly agrees. Then suddenly the grandmother realizes that the house is not in Georgia but in Tennessee. This realization makes her accidentally kick the basket where the cat was hidden. The cat jumps out and creates a commotion in the car. The cat lands on Bailey’s shoulder and he loses control. The car land in a ditch below the road. The mother of the children is the only one injured. As the family waits for assistance a black car comes down the road and three men step out. The grandmother realizes that one of the person is the Misfit and says aloud that she recognizes him.

The escaped prisoners realize the danger and decides to murder the whole family. Misfit’s men take Bailey and children to the woods and pistol shots are heard. The Misfit claims that he has no memory of his father’s murder. Then the men return and take the mother and other children to the woods. The grandmother tries to plead for her own life and starts coaxing the Misfit. She call him like her son and this fires up the Misfit. He instantly kills the grandmother. The Misfit then reprimands one of his men as he comments on having some fun. The psychotic nature of Misfit is revealed as he say ‘It is no pleasure in real life’. The Story ends with this dark ending.
