Oogenesis begins in the ovary in intrauterine life at 6 -8 week of gestation.

  • Maximum number of oocytes are at 5th month of development (20 week of gestation) = 6-7 million (before birth)
  • At birth it is around 2 million primary oocytes
  • At puberty this number is reduced to 300,000 to 500,000 (of which only 500 are destined to mature during individual lifetime and other undergo atresia)
  • Most of the follicles die or undergo atresia
